Things parents are caught out by

  • Our practice papers follow the FSCE format and are not a match for this test. Both papers here are multiple choice, there is no creative writing, and there is non-verbal reasoning, which the FSCE does not set.
  • The English and maths practice is still useful; the paper structure is not the one your child will sit.
  • North Yorkshire Council organises the testing, not the school, and registration goes through the council.
  • Unlike the Halifax schools, there is a catchment: children living inside it are placed ahead of those outside, with siblings and then distance deciding within each group.
  • The school’s published Year 7 policy is dated September 2021, so confirm the figures with the council before relying on them.

Registering is not applying

Registering for the test is not an application for a place. The application goes to your home local authority on its Common Application Form, and the national closing date for secondary transfer is 31 October.

This school sets a different test

Our papers are written for the FSCE, which is not the test this school sets. Preparing with them would be preparing for the wrong exam, so follow the school’s own guidance instead.
