Grammar schools

Every grammar school that sets the FSCE test

The FSCE has spread well beyond the two towns it started in: 21 schools across 8 counties now set it, or have announced they will. Which schools, what each paper actually contains, how many places are on offer and when registration opens — every fact below comes from a school’s own pages, its consortium’s or its local authority’s, and links back to it.

Where to start

The grammar school year, in five steps

  1. 1

    Research

Work out which test your child sits

Five of the six schools here set the FSCE, and even then not identically. Ripon sets a different test entirely. The school decides the format, so check the school rather than the county.

  2. 2

    Prepare

Start in Year 4 or Year 5

Every one of these tests is limited to the curriculum taught up to the end of Year 5, so the work is accuracy and speed under time, not new content.

  3. 3

    Register

Register in the spring, before the summer holidays

Registration opens between March and May and closes in June, July or August, before the new school year starts. Missing it costs a full year, and schools register separately from one another.

  4. 4

    Test day

Sit the test in September of Year 6

Each section is timed separately and cannot be reopened once finished. A child may normally sit a school’s test only once.

  5. 5

    Offer

Apply to your local authority by 31 October

The application is separate from the test and goes to your home local authority. Results arrive in mid-October, before that deadline, and offers follow on national offer day in March.

The FSCE is not one test, and this is the difference that matters most when you practise. The Halifax schools and Heckmondwike set a creative writing paper. Ermysted’s, Skipton and the Gloucestershire seven do not. Gloucestershire sets a third paper the others have no equivalent of, on a school subject the child chooses. Where a row says unconfirmed, only tutoring sites report the school as FSCE and the school itself has not said so — ask the school before you prepare for a format.

  • Parents are told whether their child met the standard by mid-October, before the local authority’s closing date.

Registering is not applying

Registering for the test is not an application for a place. The application goes to your home local authority on its Common Application Form, and the national closing date for secondary transfer is 31 October.

Reaching the qualifying standard does not secure a place on its own. Where a school has more qualified applicants than places, its published admissions criteria decide who is offered one.

Preparing for it

Start with the free baseline test to see where your child stands, then work through the mock papers in order. Every question is original, written to the published format, with an explanation for every answer.
